Tiger Woods - Prodigy to Pariah

broke From the moment Tiger Woods PGA on the scene, golf has never been the same. The era of Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player and Lee Trevino was largely over. Arnie had marched into the sunset with 62 career PGA victories, including seven majors, Jack career victories with 73 and a record 18 majors; Gary career victories with 24, including 9 Majors PGA, Lee and career with 23 victories, including six majors. Jack and Arnie would still gigs on the tour, in the worship of the golf fansand occasionally succeed, to be competitive. If Tont Eldrick Woods, an African American father, son and an Asian mother almost lapped the field in 1997 to win the Masters to the coveted "Green Jacket", the era of the Tiger was born. The aggressive, risk-taking style of Palmer, Nicklaus, the meticulous style, the carefree, "hectic" Trevino style and the "tough-minded style of the players had captured the imagination of a largely white gallery.

With the coming of Tiger, the interestGolf jumped among all ethnic groups, especially African-Americans. For the first time the PGA had a player on his tour, which not only looked like us, was a winner! A driving range near my home was suddenly occupied evenings and weekends by the African-American men whacking that little white ball. These guys were not meant for the previously football, baseball and basketball, golf sport.

Before Tiger, if someone had told me I would spend Saturday and Sunday afternoon gluedTV viewing of adult men hitting a little white ball and tried meticulously to maneuver it into a hole, I would have told them that they were out of their heads. But that is exactly what I did. I have learned what an eagle, which is birdies and bogeys are. I've learned that in the Gulf, unlike baseball, is football and basketball, less is more, low score wins. More than anything, I saw a man revolutionize the game.

Golf is not just a mental game, but a physical game. Walking 18 holesone days, 72 holes or more in the course of a tournament requires physical fitness. Forty years before Tiger was Arnie that possessed lean, sinewy look. Nicklaus, the "Golden Bear" was the antithesis of Arnie, but made it work with hours of practice and a peaceful, focused approach to the game. If Tiger, at 6ft 1in, 185 lbs, went to the golf course, it was obvious that the man had spent time in the gym. By the end of the game on a hole, Tiger walks quickly to the next holeSize up for his next shot. Other members of the tour quickly discovered that they not only show, with a minimum preparation time, in any form, and expect to compete with this man. At some point, I think most members of the tour came to the conclusion that at the beginning of a tournament, they play mainly for second place and beyond were. There is no shame, because thanks to the Tigers, the second is money darn good money.

On 27 November 2009, a seemingly innocent car accidentby 2 clock in the morning before his residence in motion a chain of events that are still spiral set. Affairs with at least 25 women were "allegedly" by the marriage of the world's No. 1 golfer in danger. Woods announced, 11 December 2009 that he was stepping away from golf, as he tries to save his marriage after his confession to infidelity. The world of sport asks, he can come back and be as good as he was?

Here is what I believe. I do not believe one minute that Tiger has had affairs25 women. When did he find the time to practice and be as good as he is? It is sad that in the "Boulevard of society" in which we live, women can "come out of their holes" and "velvet" to destroy a man's character. One fact, however, is undeniable. As a married man with a family, a matter is one too many, and Tiger has to do with the consequences. If he, that fighting spirit for which he is known, can conjure, he can come back. Unfortunately, his image is forever tarnished.

I wasBrowsing the Internet recently and came to the website of the World Golf Hall of Fame. I clicked on "View Members" to the recruits. Arnie, Jack Lee and Gary were there. Ben Hogan, Bobby Jones and Sam Snead were there. Greg Norman and Vijay Singh, yes, that Vijay Singh, were here. But Tiger Woods NO! How can that be? If Tiger never takes another swing at a golf ball, which he has won 71 times (third all time behind Sam Snead and Jack Nicklaus), and 14 majors (secondbehind Nicklaus). Given Tiger's current problems, could he possibly be denied entry into the Hall because he is now perceived as a bad "role model"? If so, this would be a travesty of infinite proportions!
